Story
I will start telling the story about one exceptional yacht model by mentioning the narrative of one car – the car about which everyone fantasized and that has never been constructed.
At one point in time, Lee Iacocca and the boys from Detroit visited Enzo Ferrari. Lee, the leading manager of auto industry of that time, planned on collaborating with Enzo, the leading constructor, in order to create a supercar. Enzo rejected them by stating that he as an author cannot function as a small wheel in such a big system. His rights as an author and his freedom would be limited. In that kind of system, that type of car is impossible to make, Enzo stated.
When they arrived back to Detroit, Lee Iacocca assigned his engineers to create a feasibility study on how much it would cost Ford to overthrow Ferrari from a throne of the world’s oldest sports car race in endurance racing – The 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Thus, Lee turned another page in history. After six years in a row of Ferrari, in 1966 Ford raised to the throne. The legendary model GT40! And then again in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Not even after almost half a century later did Ferrari manage to climb the highest step of the throne.
We can only guess what the supercar would look like had they put together their skills. However, as opposed to this asphalt story, the one in relation to ocean has a different outcome.
In the year 1992 there was a big anniversary; five hundred years since Christopher Columbus sailed to America.
The world’s largest producer of recreational vessels, the French Beneteau, has just entered, under the brand name CNB Construction Navale Bordeaux, the super yachts segment with two models of sailing yachts – length of hull, 70 and 77 feet. In the years to follow, they will build yachts up to 200 feet in length.
At that time, the leading architect of yachts for the race around the world – today known as Volvo Ocean Race and back then known as Whitbread Round the World Race – was a New Zealander Bruce Farr. Farr has kept his status as the world’s leading architect of yachts for this particular race until the present day. The largest and the best have reached an agreement regarding the construction, for this particular anniversary, of special series of boats.
The story goes even a step further. The largest shipyard and the world’s leading architect were joined by Italian Pininfarina, a renowned design studio, to work on the project. Design is a category which is hard to measure. Regarding their contribution to the project, designers said that they took in consideration three factors. First, tradition must be obeyed; second, in terms of design, functionality is the priority; and third, it must contain innovation. The result of their work were three models of yachts: 45, 53 and 62 feet in length. The longest model was produced under two brand names: Beneteau 62 and CNB 64. A total of 18 yachts of this kind were built in a period between 1992 and 2004.
Of this number, less than half of those yachts, were built with interior design based on the recommendation of Pininfarine in two-color wood combination, with mahogany and Finnish birch, which give bright and warm atmosphere.
That was a time when businessmen used to participate in this demanding race around the world. On his yacht, in 1985-86, Simon Le Bon also, while participating in the race, circumnavigated the world.
Later on, the race went in another direction. Ascetic vessels were being built, and businessmen were substituted by professional athletes.
Bogey One represents 1 of 18 yachts that were built during that constructive undertaking. Today, in respect to its features, it is a cross-section of luxury super yacht, sports sailing yacht and artistic heritage.
Bogey One is a luxurious sailing super yacht. It is 18,95 meters long and 5,20 meters wide. It weighs 40 tons gross. It has three guest cabins, each cabin has its own toilet and bathroom. The crew has a separate cabin with toilet and bathroom. The kitchen is a separate room. When I say kitchen, what I mean to say is professional kitchen. The yacht is not equipped only with equipment whose sole purpose is that of luxury, such as an icemaker or an air conditioner. It is also equipped with such systems which allow it to circumnavigate across the globe at any moment. Thus, there are systems for desalination of sea water, aggregates, inverter, radar, communication and navigation systems designed for the most demanding conditions in mind, as wells as lifesaving and rescue equipment. Such large space and equipment have no other functionality but to simply open up possibilities.
Bogey One is a sports yacht. If we exclude strictly competitive ascetic yachts that provide no comfort for the crew, Bogey One is faster than all other yachts with sails that you will be able to see on the horizon. Despite the fact that Bogey One represents overabundant luxury, it has a genuine heart in it. The deck is constructed in such way to provide enough space for a table so even ten people can sit around it, and which is completely separated from other parts of the deck which require sports involvement. There are no ropes nor winches – only the space for enjoyment exists. In order to reach the highest possible level of sailing experience, Bogey One has sails made of tri-radial cuts from laminate with Pentex fiber. Special emotion is aroused when giant colorful sail areas of Gennaker and Spinnaker expand.
Bogey One is an artistic heritage. Whether we spend time on deck or below deck we get a sense of timeless design. This heritage requires special care and constant investment in maintenance. One may reside at the premises made of two-color high quality wood, mahogany and Finnish birch, that creates bright and warm ambience. At a time when the yacht was constructed, twenty years ago, its catalogue price of basic construction, without taxes, was 650 thousand pounds. If the yachts, having those dimensions and that kind of standard, were built today their price would exceed two million Euros.
Bogey One is a yacht of extreme beauty, great possibilities and a high level of security.
